Hopmeadow Animal Hospital - Our Doctors

Dr. Hal Mooney started his affiliation with Hopmeadow Animal Hospital as a technician in 1976 and has been working as a doctor since 1981.

Hal received his undergraduate at The Ohio State University and received his DVM at the University of Parma in Italy, one of the world’s oldest veterinary schools, in 1981. He recently became a certified canine rehabilitation therapist from the Canine Rehabilitation Institute.

His areas of interest include dentistry, physical therapy, though he never gets tired of meeting and caring for new puppies and kittens. When not working, he enjoys many hobbies including gardening and collecting Lionel trains. He is an avid sports enthusiast who loves the Box Red Sox, New England Patriots, and UConn women’s basketball. He loves to travel and visit his 2 grandchildren. Hal lives in West Hartford with his wife Judy and their dog Lily. He has a daughter, Melissa, who is an audiologist in Atlanta and a son, Steven, who is an actor in NYC.

Dr. Renee Hartshorn graduated in 2009 with honors from Edgewood College in Madison, WI with degrees in biology, chemistry and broad fields natural sciences. She spent a year doing medical research before going on to graduate from Tufts University in 2014 with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. Dr. Hartshorn completed a 1 year rotating internship at East Bay Veterinary Specialists and Emergency in Walnut Creek, CA and worked as an emergency veterinarian for 4 years before transitioning to general practice.

Dr. Hartshorn loves working with pets and their owners to develop the best plans to keep four-legged family members as healthy as possible.

When not at work, Dr. Hartshorn enjoys doing anything creative (writing, painting, crafts, baking) and spending time with her family. Her family includes three happy labs (Frankie, Drifter and Encore) and two cats: Mukherjee, who was adopted as a kitten from a shelter and kept Dr. Hartshorn company during vet school, and Trinket who was a stray that she rescued and nursed back to health.
